Alpha

« Back to Glossary Index

Alpha is a term used to describe the excess returns earned by an investment portfolio compared to its benchmark or index.

Alpha is calculated by subtracting the expected return of the benchmark from the actual return of the portfolio. If the portfolio’s return is higher than the benchmark’s expected return, the difference is considered positive alpha. Conversely, if the portfolio’s return is lower than the benchmark’s expected return, the difference is negative alpha.
